MN fishing opener report 2026

Minnesota Fishing Opener Is Here...

The fishing opener has come and gone with mixed results. It was warmer, but very windy so it didn't feel very warm. The walleyes were hit or miss.  If you found a hungry school of walleyes, they were good size however. Most were caught on jigs and shiners, leeches and a few on plastics in 5 to 10' of water.  Pitching jigs into the shallows is about as simple as fishing gets, but when that thump comes...well, you know what I mean!

The crappie bite was the best action last weekend. They were caught in the shallows and near docks. Plastics and minnows both worked.  Just had to find 'em and pick away.

Some nice size largemouth bass are still biting. Some of the largemouth are up to 20" caught on wacky worms, swim jigs and chatter baits. We're finding most of our bass in the shallows,  between 4-8' of water near weeds and sand.

There are a few Northern pike being caught but it's still a bit slow for them. They will pick up here soon as the water warms and will be eating just about anything.

The bass were hitting wacky worms in 2-6' of water this morning on Lake Minnetonka. The best presentation was to work the worm slow or just let it sit on the bottom.
