Mid August Fishing Report from Lake Minnetonka in MN
The Latest from Lake Minnetonka in MN...
This is our mid-August report from how the bite has been in the area.
We have had rain the last two Fridays, but we fished through it, and we were rewarded. Last Friday, we caught some big bass, including a 21" near 6 lbs. And this Friday's corporate event was the biggest 3 fish in inches. So we trolled for pike, and my client put a nice 30" in the boat right away. Then we lost a pike and a bass, so we moved to a different spot. Now the wind picked up to 40 MPH with 2-3' waves rolling at us as we trolled the windy side of the lake. We didn't go too far and decided to slide over to the calmer side. And then we started catching a mixed bag of bass and pike while trolling the outside weedline with crankbaits. We caught 2 more decent pike for our 3-fish bag. We headed back to Lord Fletcher's docks, and my clients ended up winning with the 3 biggest fish of the morning. Sometimes the worst weather can be the best fishing. Put on that rain gear and go for it.
We are still catching a mixed bag of bass and pike, with most of the fish being caught in 12-20' weeds. The key is to still work that plastic worm slow! Let it sit, give it a couple of small jigs, let it sit, and then you will feel the tap tap, set the hook, and fish on!
There are a lot of schools of minnows in Lake Minnetonka right now. Yesterday we watched sunfish chase the minnows. They were jumping out of the water trying to get away from the sunfish. And there were three loons really close to the boat diving under the water after the bait. It's fun watching the adult loons feed their young ones.
Get the kids out before they are back to school.
